Pencil Gripping 101 – What’s Normal and What’s Not

The way a child grips their pencil has a
major effect on their writing clarity, speed, and stamina.

 Common Types of Pencil Grips:

  • Dynamic tripod (ideal): Thumb and index finger pinch, middle finger supports
  • Thumb wrap: Thumb curls over the pencil
  • Five-finger grasp: All fingers hold the pencil awkwardly
  • Fist grip: Common in toddlers, but should be phased out by age 5

At Junior Mind Box Singapore, we use customised pencil grips and targeted exercises in our handwriting improvement classes to retrain poor grips without creating stress or shame. Because a good grip is a lifelong skill.
